Beyond Programmes: Crafting a Mindfulness Practice That Fits You.

Updated: Apr 20

When it comes to practicing mindfulness you could be forgiven for thinking that there are certain ways of practicing that are necessary for the successful cultivation of mindful awareness. There are many classic mindfulness techniques and ways of structuring a regular practice, but there is always more than one way to crack an egg.

The internet is overloaded with 7‑step programmes for achieving almost every conceivable human goal and of course there is nothing wrong with any of that, but that is not how we roll at Foundation Mindfulness or, indeed, how we crack eggs.

Mindfulness as Empowerment

Mindfulness is primarily a tool of empowerment. The great gift it offers is a sense of presence that allows us to find a way forward for ourselves.

There is no programme or schedule that must be rigidly adhered to or shoehorned into your busy life. There is not even any specific or measurable goal we have to achieve.

These guidelines and programmes are there if you need them, but they should be seen as just that: offerings. They invite you to follow a certain path that is no doubt tried and tested, but we have to remember—there is no one path that we must follow. There is nothing wrong with taking a different route as it will unlock something unique.

There will always be as many flavours of mindfulness practice as there are mindfulness practitioners.

Wuwei: The Art of Non‑Doing

There are two wonderful ways to approach your practice in this spirit of exploration.

The first is to embrace the Daoist principle of Wuwei, the art of non‑doing. It sounds like laziness or just a non‑committal “going with the flow” attitude, but it means something deeper.

Yes, there is flow, but it is like the flow of water:

- Water flows around obstacles and meets resistance with acceptance.

- And yet, water is so powerful it shapes the earth itself.

Wuwei means we don’t push too hard. Like an Aikido master, it is knowing exactly when to apply force so that forcing becomes effortless.

Mindfulness naturally dovetails with this principle of effortless action. When we practice mindfulness, we notice and observe, accept and allow whatever the present moment gives rise to. We let go of resistance and open up to trust. We trust that in this moment, everything is exactly as it needs to be and all we have to do is be here with it.

Resonance: Inner and Outer in Alignment

The second way is through resonance, which in the realm of the mind, body and spirit means for the inner world to be in alignment with the outer world.

When we tune in to our thoughts, emotions and consciousness and connect deeply with the wisdom of the body, we can notice the quality of the relationship we have with our external reality.

Through this state of consciousness we can move beyond the analytical mind and be guided instead by the intuitive direction of our core being and the powerful calling of our hearts. When dealing with the complex nature of a human existence, where confusion and ego can reign supreme, this innate wisdom is unmatched in its ability to help us find the way through.

Gentle Curiosity as Your Guide

The gentle curiosity inherent in these two approaches is also the hallmark of mindful practice and will always be your best guide as to how you create, maintain and grow your practice over time.  With gentle curiosity, you can explore:

  • What kind of practice actually feels nourishing to you?

  • Which teachers, courses or platforms truly resonate?

  • Which techniques feel like a good starting point—and which ones don’t?

  • How your practice might evolve over time as your needs change?

  • How do you want to balance formal practice (like sitting meditation) with informal practice (awareness woven through everyday life)?

Instead of forcing yourself to fit someone else’s mold, you gradually shape a practice that fits you.

You might discover that:

  • A short daily body scan works better than a long weekly session.

  • Mindful walking or washing the dishes suits you more than sitting on a cushion.

  • Some days call for stillness, others for movement or creativity.

Your curiosity can keep asking, “What supports me now?” and allow the answers to shift.

Let Your Practice Grow From Within

Over time, practice becomes less of a “thing you do” and more of a natural way of being. Softening the edges of stress and reactivity and deepening your connection to yourself, others and the world. Through resonance and effortless flow you will build the mindfulness practice that will sit naturally at the heart of your everyday life, enriching and enlivening each moment. Your mind and body singing with the rhythms of the universe.

There is no single right way to get there. There is only your way.

And that, in itself, is the practice.
